Puck's Weekend Forecast, 2005

wpe20.jpg (4753 bytes)
Tom "Hockey Puck/Nutman" McKenna has worked as a statman with Ted since 1977. He swore in mid-2003 that he could pick games better than Huck, so the challenge was on! (He hasn't done so yet, but he's trying again for year No. 3.)
Puck is a legend and known by sports figures
throughout the city and elsewhere. Everyone
considers him a friend.
The pic at the right was taken in 2001. Here's a
link to explain it.

WEEK 14
   Puck's comment:
"Phew. If it wasn't for Ryan, me and Huck be tie goin' into

this week. So tell Ryan kids I appreciate it. Imagine if I blew 6-game lead."
THE PICKS
SJ Prep 24, O'Hara 14:
"I know Prep gonna move ball. I just not confident that
O'Hara gonna move it enough for three TD. Maybe O'Hara defense can score?
Like they did against La Salle? That what it gonna take. Gotta go with Prep, though."
Wood 17, West 14: "Wood better along line of scrimmage. That gonna make difference."

WEEK 13
   Puck's comment:
"Here my comment for Puck . . . I mean Huck. Now my lead down

to four games. Lotta games this week that could be close. If I mess up and Huck do good,
I'm gonna be a dead duck. That sound good, right? Puck Could Be Dead Duck. Ha, ha."

WEEK 12
   Puck's comment:
"No need to talk. I in the driver seat. Just shut up and write down
my choices. Here we go . . . "
SJ Prep 28, Judge 7: "This probably be like last year, when Bonner upset Roman in
first round then got waffle by Prep in semis."
West Catholic 31, Carroll 14: "Carroll gave up too many points to N-G for me to take
them serious for upset bid. West got lotsa hunger, too. All they thinking about: Get back
to Wood, get back to Wood."
Wood 28, Conwell-Egan 17: "Wood got too much strength. More speed, too."
Northeast 17, Frankford 14: "Frankford people cool, but how can I pick a team that win
in first two rounds by only three points combined? Plus, Northeast got good kicker. He can
take them to top of the Mountney. Ha ha."
O'Hara 17, La Salle 14: "Oh, man. Make it O'Hara. Just got a feeling."

WEEK 11
   Puck's comment:
"I'm gettin' scared. Lotta tough games on this week card.

Huck have chance to catch up. Wood save me last week. They beat West and
that kept me six games ahead of Huck. If not, my lead only be four games.
Phew, that too close. So thanks again, Wood. You cool."
TWO TO TALK ABOUT
Northeast 14, Washington 13: "Washington good. I respect them. But it gonna
seem better for the league if someone else get in there. Need some variety. Wouldn't
mind seein' Germantown beat Frankford, too. Don't know if they got enough light
and glory, though." (Ted's note: I asked Puck what he meant by light and glory.)
"I don't know. It just sound like a good phrase. Put it in. You wanna win a big
game, you need light and glory."
La Salle 21, Ryan 14: "Jimmy Emanuel gonna have his Ryan linebacker corps
playin' tough. I still think Brett Gordon offense gonna find a way to score at least
three TDs."

WEEK 10
   Puck's comment:
"Yo, Huck, it's money time this week. I'm gonna give
you three good pick to cut my lead. I feel bad bein' up 6 games. You are
the champ at this crap. I just lucky. You can take Roman, West and Egan
and I go the other way. There also a steal in the Pub non-league stuff. I
can't give you that one, though. Gotta find it yourself. If you lose this week,
pressure really on. Time to start thinkin' about West Catholic basketball.
Not even Thanksgiving could bring you back . . . Oh, one more thing. If I
DO lose, I WILL feel like '64 Phillies You wight about that."
FOUR TO TALK ABOUT
Judge 21, Ryan 13: "Battle of the Northeast."
SJ Prep 24, O'Hara 14: "Supreme battle of power coaches. Gil vs. Danny.
I'd like to see these staffs have a beer-drinking contest. Ha ha."
La Salle 17, Roman 14: "Two of my favorite players ever are assistants in
this one. Brett Gordon for La Salle. Joe McCourt for Roman. Let them go
one on one . . . Yo, Ted. You call me a goofball? Ha, ha, ha. You put down the
score as 14-14. How that gonna be? Ha, ha, ha. This ain't the old days. Where
you been? They got overtime now. It should be 17-14. La Salle kicker gonna
win it near the end."
Bonner 28, North 14: "Teams don't even know one another. They need a
good pep talk to get thing rollin'. Jeff Jones vs. Chris Edwards. Oops. Wrong
sport. Ha, ha. Wait 'til basketball season."
SOME OTHERS
Wood 21, West 20: "There you go, Huck. Take West."
Carroll 20, C-E 17: "Main Line vs. Bucks County. Weird matchup.
Tough to care."
N-G 27, Dougherty 6: "Please. Don't call this the battle of South Philly. Or
anywhere."
McDevitt 26, K-K 21: "This a battle. Jermaine Pierce vs. Manny Harrison."
Malvern 40, Episcopal 21: "Gamp vs. Bill Gallagher. Bill, you my man, but
Gamp got too many years of experience. He a wizard."
PC 28, Haverford School 16: "Irish people gonna like this one. Brian
McCloskey vs. Michael Murphy."
Gtn. Academy vs. Maryland Christian Saints: "Ted, take this one off the board.
It bad enough AAU killin' basketball. Not it gonna kill football?"

FINAL THOUGHT

"About the Wood-West and Prep-O'Hara games . . . Really, how much it mean to
win the first time around? Second meeting gonna be for it all."

WEEK NINE
   Puck's comment:
"I'm still lucky from last week, winning Edison over
U. City. (I still don't know if that extra point run was good). I don't think
even a camera coulda know for sure. It kept me three games ahead of
Huck. This must be my year, gettin' luck like that."
FIVE TO TALK ABOUT
West Catholic 28, Carroll 10: "WC too good. Dennis Shaw one of best backs in city.
Carroll will have trouble containing him. Not even Murphy and Bielli can top one of best
coaching staffs in Catholic League."
Judge 21, Bonner 20: "Big game for Judge in playoff hunt. Must get strong defensive effort
against best QB in league."
O'Hara 24, Roman 20: "O'Hara just too good on defensive side of ball. Roman need passing
game like last week. Danny Algeo know Roman cold."
Malvern 28, Penn Charter 13: "Malvern got too many weapons. Cotton can kill you 20
different ways. Mitchell strong on option. The kicking game best in league, too, with Buckley.
I met that kid. He nice. Penn Charter need another hurricane to hit. Mess up the field."
Bok 13, Franklin 12: "It very hard to go against DeFelice. Knows the game very well. I do
like Franklin, but they probably gonna fall just short at end."

WEEK EIGHT
   Puck's comment:
"I feel good being up 3 games on Huck. Now I don't have to
take underdogs trying to catch up. I'm in driver seat. Huck in passenger seat. I
know he don't want to be in that position, especially with me drivin'. Ha, ha, ha.
Could you imagine that? Me drivin'? Ha, ha, ha. Oh, here another way to look
at it. A basketball thing. I can spread the floor. Huck have to pressure me with
upsets."
FOUR TO TALK ABOUT
   Roman 27, Judge 24:
"Hard game to pick. Being at Conshy, have to
favor Roman. If I knew Joe Thompson injury situation, maybe I go with
Judge. My heart with them."
Frankford 24, Northeast 19: "Great game. Northeast kickin' game is
great (expecting four FGs outta him) but I think they'll have trouble gettin'
TDs."
Lincoln 17, Overbrook 13: "Very good game. Like Duck said, Overbrook
gettin' better every week. I like Lincoln, but I gotta admit upset possible."
Penn Charter 21, Episcopal 14: "Bill Gallagher is one of my favorite
coaches. Losing his FB will hurt him. He should know PC offense, though.
Brian McCloskey gonna have to do some changes."

WEEK SEVEN
   Puck's comment:
"Huck crazy if he think I'm gonna roll over. What, he think

he the only guy who can do picks? I'm pretty good, too. Now I just gotta show
it again this week."
FOUR TO TALK ABOUT
   Conwell-Egan 21, Neumann-Goretti 20:
"I can't believe that 53-0 score.
West not that good. OK team, at best. I know that ride home must have seem
like 2 hours. Publicity director Mike Tos probably stop keeping stats in the
second half. Had to get 'em afterward from Huck. Yo, Egan, get your sleep.
South Philly another long trip. This'll come down to speed vs. smarts."
Malvern 32, Haverford School 20: "Better game than you think. Mike Murphy
have the Fords playing well. Plus, I like them 'cause their win over Reading CC
help me beat Huck. Malvern only got short week to prepare. Maybe Huck should
pick upset? Yeah, tell him to do that."
Gratz 14, Bartram 13: "Please, not at Northeast on a Saturday night.
What is wrong with Germantown field? Closer to both schools. Public
League need to get a little smarter. Too many nitwits runnin' the operation. The
worst thing is, this is only city game Saturday night. Might have to hit suburbs."
Wood 28, McDevitt 20: "Could be best Blue game. Lancers a funny team.
Don't know what planet these kids are on. Wood should win. Too strong along
the line."

WEEK SIX
Puck's comment: "Huck got me again. Just by one, though, thanks to Penn Charter.

They savin' me every week. Know what killin' me? The damn Pub games. I'm just
hoping to come back this week and get a win over him. I need it bad."
FOUR TO TALK ABOUT
   North vs. Judge:
"Tell people they gotta wait. Can't pick this one yet. I'm friends with
(Judge coach) Tommy Coyle and all the North coaches. This is big game for North kids.
Next three games tell your season. You wasn't gonna be in them last two anyway. Judge,
same thing pretty much. Next five games will tell your story. Good luck to both teams . . .

All right, I'm ready. Go with Nor . . . No, go with Judge, 27-20."
Roman 24, Ryan 7: "Tough break losing Joe Zeglinski, Ryan. Now it time for Mike
Varanavage to step up in the valley of the sunlight." (Note from Ted: Whatever that means
-- ha ha). "Roman been playing good football. They better than Ryan defensively. This
big game for John Quinn 'cause he coached Roman AND Ryan."
Northeast 27, Germantown 12: "Now G-town gotta win away from their garden." (Note
again from Ted: Whatever that means -- ha ha). "You not playin' Mastbaum, G-town. You
playin' Northeast. Different world."
Penn Charter 14, Valley Forge 13: "I stay with Penn Charter. They won three games for
me over Huck. They my good-luck charm."

WEEK FIVE
Puck's comment: "I been bangin' my head on the wall so much over some of these
picks, I'm about to go brain dead. Ha, ha, ha. That a funny comment, right? Phew,
they're some tough ones. Last week, I was doin' good on Friday. I went 13-3. Guess
what? Huck went 16-0, so my losses was 'differences games.' When I found out, man, I
was so down. Thirteen-three pretty good, right? Not next to 16-0."
FOUR TO TALK ABOUT
   La Salle 27, Judge 14:
"Good effort for Judge last week against O'Hara, but
now they gotta play Brett Gordon and Co. Too much passin'. Watch out, Billy
Koch (d-back coach)."
   McDevitt 20, Conwell-Egan 13:
"This coulda been a great battle of Manny
Harrison runnin' against Steve Slaton. But Steve at West Virginia. Yo, tell him come
to come back just for this one. McDevitt looking for a good season. Should come
through."
Malvern 27, Peddie (N.J.) 20: "My man Paul Ostick shoulda gotten all the credit
last week. He push everybody around. Once he open holes, guys run through them."
Landon (Md.) 33, Haverford School 14:
"Yo, Haverford, don't you like playin'

in Philly area? You playin' all over. Delaware. Maryland. What the deal?"

WEEK FOUR
Puck's comment: "This great, right? Me beatin' Huck two times already.
I know he look at my picks every week before he make his. Yo, he need to
change up a little. Only two differences? That ain't good. We should have
about five. Yo, Huck, take a gamble every once in a while. Maybe then you
can beat me. Ha ha ha."
THREE TO TALK ABOUT
   Bonner 14, Ryan 13:
"Ryan help me out last week, beatin' Wood so I
could beat Huck, but now I gotta pick against them. This expensive game
for Ryan people, with the way gas cost so much money now."
West Catholic 14, McDevitt 10: "I'd like to take McDevitt, but I know
Huck gonna take West and I can't afford to have him get one on me. But,
know what? Now that I take West, maybe he take McDevitt just to be
different."
SJ Prep 38, Roman 7: "This gonna be the TV game? Bad move. Shoulda
been Bonner-Ryan. How they gonna televise a game from Conshohocken
field? That place horrible. Bad lights. No press box. My advice to Joe
Malizia (shoots game films), get there early. TV people take up so much
room, you gonna have to shoot from 10-yard line. That ain't fair. You been
doing games since '60s. These TV guys just startin'."

like last year -- me chasing Huck. Hope I just in a one-week slump."
FIVE TO TALK ABOUT
North Penn 38, Carroll 7: "Yo, Murph (offensive coordinator Fran Murphy) my boy,
but North Penn best team in suburbs. This level of competition too steep."
   O'Hara 35, West Catholic 13: "Tell Huck I can't take a team like West against a team
like O'Hara. If I keep makin' picks like that, he gonna be 20 games ahead of me."
Chestnut Hill 20, Haverford School 19: "This gonna be good. Good entertainment.
Lotta commotion. Episcopal coaches say Chestnut Hill ain't gonna lose again this year.
Sorry, Haverford, but that include this one."
Ryan 17, Wood 14: "Joey Z (Zeglinski) my boy. He the only reason I pickin' Ryan
because Wood actually a little better, probably, maybe, uh, phew, this one tough."

FIVE TO TALK ABOUT
St. Ignatius (O) 17, SJ Prep 14: "It will be hard to beat Ohio team unless Shaw and
Whitney are truly spectacular."
Carroll 21, U. Merion 14: "I give Carroll credit for finally gettin' a tough non-league
schedule. Now you like The Prep. But you gotta win them, also."
Jenkintown 20, Freire 8: "Battle of the giants. Standing room only. They shoulda
made this one a doubleheader with Prep-Ignatius. What Freire mean anyway? Is it
some guy name? How you say it? Free-air-ee? Free-air? Freer? These new schools
drive me nuts."
North Penn 27, O'Hara 14: "O'Hara need more offense or it'll be a long Knight."

WEEK ONE
Puck's comment: "I gotta beat Huck one of these years. Right? Don't I? He can't win every year.
Right? Can he? . . . Maybe this my year. The teams I pick different from Huck, they gotta try hard.
Gotta help me out. Who cooler? Me or Huck. That pick easy. Ha ha ha ha."
FIVE TO TALK ABOUT
Washington 49, Dougherty 6 ("Frankford playin' Strath Haven. Dobbins playin' CB East. Bartram

Washington should play Council Rock North. Dougherty should play U. City. They'd be two good
